ESPN.com is reporting that Tiger Woods is out for the year with a damaged ACL that will require surgery.

My first reaction: WOW. Just when you thought his 91-hole win last weekend couldn’t be more impressive, you find out he was playing on a stress-fractured tibia and a busted anterior cruciate ligament. This has to surpass Jordan scoring 37 with the flu in the 97 Finals, right?

My second reaction: Bummer. The British and PGA are going to be nowhere near as fun without Tiger. Come to think of it, he’ll probably be the top story of both, without even being there.

My third reaction: Write it down now, the return of Tiger Woods will be THE sports story of 2009.

    Well,

At least someone else will win. :)

My response? I enjoy watching Tiger. He is a great player. But do I think that his season ending injury is news compared to the floods in Iowa, earthquakes in China, the war in Iraq, the presidential campaign? No. I really didn’t need to see it announced over and over and over and over and over yesterday like it was real news. Tiger is an athlete and he knew the risk he was taking playing so soon. I hope his surgery goes well and I hope that we hear about him on the sports segment, but I hope he doesn’t take priority over real news.

I probably won’t be able to stomach The Open or the PGA Championship for that very reason - all anyone will talk about will be how Tiger isn’t there, what Tiger would do if he were, what Tiger is doing since he’s not, what color Tiger’s tonsils are, and all sorts of other things I probably can’t even imagine. It’s just so annoying. He’s not playing, so let’s please talk about the actual game?!?!
