NFL Coaching Vacancies 8

Posted on Sat Jan 17th, 2009 - 09:31 am

Thought I’d take a quick peak at the head coaching vacancies that have been filled or need to be filled as we’re only weeks away from the 2009 off-season.

Study this list in case the topic comes up during the games tomorrow, and you will seem smart and likable. You might even get offered your dream job by someone else sitting in the room…though this is unlikely.

Positions That Have Been Filled

Seattle Seahawks – Jim Mora takes over for Mike Holmgren, who retired.

Indianapolis Colts – Jim Caldwell takes over for Tony Dungy, who retired.

Cleveland Browns – Eric Mangini takes over for Romeo Crennel, who was fired.

Denver Broncos – Josh McDaniels takes over for Mike Shanahan, who was fired.

Detroit Lions – Jim Schwartz takes over for Rod Marinelli, who was fired.

Positions Yet To Be Filled

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Jon Gruden was fired yesterday, and reports are surfacing (National Football Post and maybe others) that they will hire their Defensive Coordinator, Raheem Morris, as their Head Coach.

New York Jets – Eric Mangini was fired, and the Jets have met with Steve Spagnuolo, Rex Ryan, and others about the vacancy. My guess is this job goes to Ryan, based on what I’ve read from Mike Lombardi and others.

St. Louis Rams – Scott Linehan was fired, and I think the Rams are leaning towards hiring Cowboys Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett as their Head Coach.

Oakland Raiders – Tom Cable won’t be back as the Head Coach next year, reportedly Al Davis has interviewed Kevin Gilbride, Art Shell, his mailman, and the ghost of Vince Lombardi for the position.

The Curious Case of the Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs – Former New England GM Scott Pioli has taken over in KC, and as of this moment, Herm Edwards is still the head coach. I’ve heard that Giants D-Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo might be the frontrunner if Edwards gets fired, but rumor has it that Pioli wanted McDaniels (now in Denver) or Kirk Ferentz (not leaving Iowa) and he won’t get either. Pro Sports Daily is also reporting that Pioli might stick with Edwards for 2009 with an eye to bringing on Bill Cowher next year.

If you’ve got any inside info…or you’d like to make up a juicy rumor that has no truth to it at all…please do so in the comments…

I heard that Shanahan was coming to coach my flag football team this summer.

  3. Geof F. Morris

I wonder if Mike Brown will now fire Marvin Lewis to hire Chucky.

It’s official, Raheem is the man in Tampa Bay!

The browns with Mangini? Don’t get it. Are they going to try and pull in Charlie Weis next. Kind of leads me to a more interesting point. Belichick is pure genious. Who can lose all these trusted, (they were trusted to call the plays), coordinators, the best QB ever, and still have a great year, (year after year).
I just listened to Rosevelt Colvin, (linebacker for the Pats), on the Herd w/ Colin Cowherd and he was basically saying the Belichick will completely go out of his way to be the guy no one in the media likes to keep the attention off his players and on him, where it has no effect.
    love the hood.

I know I’m one of 5 Lions fans in the world…but it is Jim Schwartz, not Jay taking over the team. At least he can only improve on this year.

my apology to you and the other 4 KDS…thanks for the heads up!
