PFB Big XII Preview: Better Sooner Than Later? 2

Posted on September 11, 2009 by Joshua

Oklahoma’s early injury troubles may pave way for Longhorn revenge. But don’t count out the other team Sooner Nation loves to hate.

Every game matters. That’s what BCS apologists like to say about the current figure skating-esque popularity contest that is Division 1 college football. That may still be the case for teams like a healthy Colt McCoy-led Texas, but injuries to reigning Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford and NFL-caliber tight end Jermaine Grisham have already threatened to give Sooner Nation plenty of meaningless games to watch this season.

The two early season injuries have probably done more to hurt Oklahoma’s

chances of playing for another Big XII title in Arlington, Texas, on Dec. 5, than their heart-wrenching first-game loss to BYU. Depending on how long Bradford is gone — Grisham is done for the year — they could go from favorite to long shot in a matter of weeks. Or even days.

Texas, still jilted from being left out of the Big XII title game last year despite taking care of business in the Red River Shootout, is now seemingly poised to keep the BCS dog from pooping on their greener pastures even without any Congressional meddling . But don’t count out that other team Sooner fans love to hate in Stillwater – the gang with the deep pocketed No. 1 fan and the explosive offensive trio of Zac Robinson, Kendall Hunter and Dez Bryant.

Texas Tech lost its passing machine, but the Mike Leach system Graham Harrell feasted on is still in place, as are several key contributors not named Michael Crabtree. Expect the Red Raiders to compete and make Harrell and Crabtree look more and more like overrated products of a system. But don’t expect a repeat of 2007.

Barring more injuries and surprises, the other eight teams in the conference (nine if the ‘stache gets too many snaps) will play the role of making the conference look good and padding the resume  of the eventual South Division winner.

Kansas, with Todd Reesing back for (believe it or not) one last tour, will put up plenty of points but will likely be the first team (Daryl Stuckey excluded) fans from other conferences will point to at the end of the season when criticizing the conference for its crap defenses. The Jayhawks are also a good bet to play whipping boy to Texas on Dec. 5, unless Bo Pelini can work his magic with only five starters returning (d-lineman Ndamukong Suh the most high profile) from a mediocre 2008 unit.

Missouri’s best days are probably now gathering dust in Chase Daniel’s trophy cabinet. In fact, we might hear more about the Tigers greatness in the past tense when Maclin catches passes on Sundays with the Eagles than we will from the pundits talking about the 2009 team. Mizzou won’t be horrible, but they’ll be brought back to earth and may even pass Baylor on their way down the overall standings. Fleet-footed QB Robert Griffin should make plenty of highlight reels this season and could lead a talented Bears team to a bowl game before it’s all over. If nothing else, they should shake both the Baptists can’t play football and doormat to the stars labels this year.

The doormat labels will more likely be affixed to the Aggies, Buffaloes and Wildcats, who will all be rare species on the national stage and the Cyclones defense, which let’s face it, still won’t be exactly tearing up any countrysides this year.

Florida and Tebow on Top Again 21

Posted on January 09, 2009 by bryan

So, what did you think of the game last night?

I didn’t catch any of the first half, but I turned it on in the 3rd quarter to see Florida take the lead, lose the lead, retake it, and then ice it with a patented Tebow jump pass.

Looking back at the predictions all of our members made, looks like I ended up being the closest with my “Florida 28, OU 17″ guess. It’s not that I thought it would be a low-scoring game…I only picked a low score because everyone else and their mom predicted a shootout.

A few more  notes about the game…

+ Tim Tebow had “John 3:16″ written on his eye black. It’s a great verse for sure, but couldn’t he have mixed it up a bit and gone with something less traditional. Even a “1 John 3:16″ would have worked.

+ Apparently Obama predicted the Gators would win earlier in the day. And yeah, he’s still calling for a playoff system.

+ I missed Tebow’s post-game speech – bed was calling – but Sports Blogger Dan Shanoff (who I believe is Jewish, and I know is a huge Florida fan) had this to say about it:

I loved the very first reaction from Tebow when he was interviewed on the podium by Fox:

“I just want to thank the fans. They are so unbelievable… I just love being a Gator and I thank all of you!”

(Yes, he eventually got to thanking Jesus, but (a) there’s nothing wrong with that — I give him so much credit for, as usual, not shoving it in our faces, and (b) that he prioritized his thankfulness for the fans and for being a Gator is at the core of his appeal.)

+ Did you catch the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty Tebow was whistled for as the game was ending? The replays showed he was taunting a Sooner player by doing the Gator chomp in his face (replay also seemed to show the Sooner player was doing some talking of his own). I thought it was funny because for the past 5 minutes the announcers were going way overboard with the Tebow lovefest. Their response to the flag: something to the effect of “that might be the first thing he’s ever done wrong.” Gak. If I was Tebow, this would annoy me to no end.

Alright, your turn…what did you think of the last 60 minutes of the college football season? And now that it’s over, are you okay with Florida as National Champions?

UPDATE: Shanoff has a few additional thoughts on the John 3:16 Eye Black.

PFB Members On … The BCS Championship 8

Here at Prayers For Blowouts we love to let our members spout off their opinions on anything and everything.

This week we we asked them for a final score prediction for the BCS National Championship game.

I’ve got to go with the speed and experience of Florida, plus doesn’t Tebow have God on his side at this point?  Florida 35 Oklahoma 28

——————————————————————

Have to say 42-35 Sooners

OU had an average of 54.8 points a game over 45 by Florida.

——————————————————————

I care more about the Cork Board episode of the show “How it’s Made” than i do this game, or college football for that matter, but what the heck… Florida 38 – Oklahoma 24.

——————————————————————

Oklahoma 41, Florida 35

.

——————————————————————

Gators 31-21

Perry Noble and the BCS 7

Posted on November 06, 2008 by bryan

Over at his blog, pastor of New Life Church Perry Noble discusses seven questions posed to him regarding the election. Perry’s answers are great (seriously, I think he nails it), especially #7:

#7 – What would be the first law that you passed if you were elected president?

I would do away with the BCS system and make them have a college football playoff! That would establish a legacy that would NEVER die!!!

The cry for a college football playoff has started up earlier than normal this year. It was Pete Carroll a few days ago. Then it was President-Elect Obama in an interview with Chris Berman. Even Sporting News Blogger Dan Shanoff got in the mix with a proposal that the SEC and Big 12 should secede from the BCS and create their own playoff in hopes that the other conferences would follow suit.

I’m not the most passionate College Football fan alive, but I do like to follow the sport. Seems to me that the current system makes things a bit more interesting during the season than an 8 or 16 team playoff would. Even so, I’d sacrifice that in heartbeat to see a playoff where the championship is won on the field by a team winning it’s last 3 or 4 games against the best competition in the land.

What about you? Think a playoff system is a must, or are you okay if we never get one?
